As of October 2020, the CSUN community has been working and learning remotely for seven months, as has much of California, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Early on in this period, University Archives, a unit within the Library’s Special Collections & Archives launched the Documenting COVID-19 project in an effort to collect expressions of Matadors’ experience during this crisis and preserve them for future generations. Project Archivist April Feldman talked with us about the endeavor.
In the wake of a digital revolution that has radically transformed the creation, distribution, and consumption of knowledge, the Oviatt Library and Academic Affairs will present a daylong symposium that will examine the unique challenges and exciting opportunities that currently exist for universities and libraries.
Everyone who produces or uses digital media and research is touched by copyright law. Although the subject sometimes provokes apprehension in both faculty and students, our upcoming workshop will help to alleviate much of that scholarly anxiety.
Copyright concerns and fair use best practices will be front and center at the upcoming workshop, Copyright Advance: Evolving Perspectives for Empowered Scholars coordinated by the Oviatt Library Copyright Team and CSUN Faculty Development. The workshop is bringing noted pioneers in the field of copyright and fair use to campus, and is geared toward faculty at CSUN.
Curator and Archivist Kelsey Knox talks about the Library’s new exhibit and shares some of her personal connections to “California’s Call: The Lure and the Lore of the Golden State.” Over 200 items from the Oviatt Library’s Special Collections and Archives have been gathered together in the Library Exhibit Gallery to showcase the ongoing myth of California as the “land of promise” or “golden state” and the role it has played as a popular destination for vacationers and settlers in the United States during the last two centuries.

Los Angeles native Robert Landau was clearly a kid destined to become a photographer. In 1969, a young Landau began shooting his first pictures, which were the colorful sights around his Hollywood home.

In a collaboration between the Marilyn Magaram Center and the College of Health and Human Development, the Friends of the Oviatt Library are pleased to welcome Julieanna Hever, M.S., R.D., C.P.T. back to the campus to share the essence of her bestselling book, Plant-Based Nutrition (Idiots Guide) 2nd Edition. Julieanna travels the globe to share her passion for healing and happiness through a whole food, plant-based diet.
Of our many services, one that is sorely missed are our in person events. Last year was full of a lot of highlights, whether it was guest authors, finals relaxation events, panels, or film screenings -- they garnered new experiences, mentoring, and educational opportunities, and a lot of fun along the way.
