The AS/RS, an electronic bin-based storage and retrieval system, was installed in the Library as part of a building expansion in 1989. First of its kind, the AS/RS occupies a 3-story section of the Library’s east wing, and contains 13,260 steel bins moved around 6 aisles by computer-driven warehouse-style cranes.
But more than books are stored in AS/RS: a substantial number of the 800,000 items from the main collection are periodicals frequently requested by patrons at other libraries through InterLibrary Loan. Additionally, 30,000 valuable Special Collections & Archives items are kept in dedicated bins.
The Oviatt Library continues its exciting transformation with a sleek and much-needed expansion of the Special Collections and Archives stacks, offices, and reading room. Phase One will bring Special Collections & Archives materials closer for the convenience of students and researchers.
A brief summary of last year’s vibrant programming schedule, and a quick glimpse of next year’s event calendar, clearly illustrates why the Oviatt Library continues to stand proudly and steadfast at the bustling crossroads of CSUN’s rich and diverse pedagogical landscape. As 2013 comes to a close, it is a fitting time to reflect on some of the diverse and wide-reaching events that have taken place in the Library over the past year.
An exciting new partnership between The Oviatt Library and CSUN Athletics results in Read to Lead; an impressive exhibition of photographs, accompanied by an inspirational series of panel discussions with a variety of leaders selected from the campus community.
Prominently situated at the center of CSUN’s sprawling campus, the Oviatt Library offers invaluable education resources to students and community members far beyond the university’s boundaries with their robust Outreach Services.
A university’s library is often the heart of its campus. Much more than just a place for students to gather, do homework, study for finals, or work on a group projects, a university Library functions as both a symbol of the power of education and as a touchstone for a university’s pulse and spirit.
All month, all free, and open to everyone: a film screening, live music, poetry, open mics, exhibits, food, and faculty presentations are all part of the Oviatt’s exciting Black History Month events schedule.
