About the Episode

For two decades, controversial sexologist John Money corresponded with Jan Dailey, a Los Angeles-based freelance sex columnist. Their relationship began in 1979 when Dailey, who lived near LAX, wrote to Money to inquire about the impact of jet noise on sexual health. They corresponded for two decades, and the letters they exchanged can be found in the Jan Dailey and John Money Correspondence Collection. In this episode, Dr. Sid Hansen explores how the theme of noise resonates with issues in the trans archive. Histories of sexology and trans medicine can turn up the volume of some voices, and lower the volume of others. Noise can pollute communities and stress and damage bodies but quiet is not always the refuge that it seems. Sometimes people have to make some noise in order to fight back and be heard.
