Creative Scanning Station

A 3D Scanner and Photo/Film Scanner are now available inside the CMS. These self-serve creative scanners are hooked up to a powerful laptop with a high-end graphics card for optimal scanning speed.

Each scanner will have a step-by-step user guide that patrons should follow carefully in order to scan their items correctly. CMS student assistants are there to assist anyone who needs additional assistance.

Reserving

Students can reserve this Creative Scanning Station through LibCal for 1-hour per day sessions. Upon arriving to their reservation, students can choose which scanner they wish to use.

Reservations are only available during open CMS service desk hours and can be made up to two weeks in advance.

  • The scanning station can only accommodate one student per reservation.
  • For a no-show during the first 10 minutes of the reservation, the entire reservation is canceled.
  • Repeated no-shows or failure to comply with established policies may result in suspension of CMS privileges and/or other Library privileges.

Student using a 3D scanner3D Scanning

As an extension of the CMS 3D printing services, students can now scan objects 7 x 7 inches in size on the desktop EinScan-SE 3D Scanner. Once scanned, models can be exported as .stl files and then reproduced in PLA plastic on the CMS 3D printers.

We recommend scanning objects that can stand or be propped up on their own and objects that are not reflective. Things like figurines, household items, and toys are great items to 3D scan. Materials that scan best include:

  • Wood
  • rubber/silicon
  • matte plastic

Using the scanner's built-in turntable, the EXScan Pro software will generate high-quality 3D data and reconstruct the real geometry of the object with fine details.

Photo/Film Scanning

In addition to 3D Scanning, students have the option to utilize our advanced Photo/Film Scanner. The Epson Perfection V600 scanner can scan photos, film, slides, and documents with 6400 x 9600 dpi resolution and the robust software ensures precision film scanning for sharp, vivid reproductions up to 17" x 22" with built-in dust and scratch removal tools.

Students who wish to scan film can also check out a 35mm Negative Film Holder insert to use with the scanner. The insert is available for a 3-hour checkout from the CMS desk.

Note: If equipment is returned late, CMS 3-hour fees will be applied by $1 per hour or portion thereof for each item until all parts are returned.
